You rely on your smart thermostat’s screen to show you the temperature so you can operate your HVAC system effectively. If it goes blank, it can be alarming. Read on for some of the most common causes of a blank smart thermostat screen so you can determine when it’s time to call a professional.
No Battery Power
Some smart thermostats may use batteries, either as backup power sources or to power the device itself if it doesn’t use your HVAC system’s electricity. If you see a blank screen, check the batteries first. Replacing them might make the screen turn back on.
Tripped Circuit Breaker
If the batteries are good and the thermostat is on, the blank screen might not require repairs. Check the circuit breaker. There’s a good chance the breaker tripped to stop the power flow and prevent an accident. Similarly, if your home is older, it may have a fuse box. If that’s the case, you’ll have to replace the broken fuse instead of flipping a breaker.
Loose Wire
Many smart thermostats use your HVAC system’s wiring to draw power. If your smart thermostat is hardwired but your system still functions and you still have power, a wire may be loose. Loose wires don’t touch connectors properly, leading to intermittent or no power.
Low Brightness
It’s also possible that you or someone else adjusted the smart thermostat’s settings and turned the brightness down too low. Try turning off the lights in the room to see if you can see the information on the screen.
Old Smart Thermostat
Another reason for a blank screen is that the smart thermostat is just too old. Thermostats generally only last for around a decade to 15 years. If you have an older one, replacing it is the best way to avoid a blank screen.
